In her fifty-fourth bestselling novel, Danielle Steel weaves a compelling story of fame and friendship, charmed lives and private struggles. and of three very different men whose lives converge and collide at The Cottage. On a sunny day in Hollywood, a gleaming Rolls-Royce convertible pulls through the gates of the magnificent estate known as The Cottage. Modeled after the "cottages" of Newport, Rhode Island, the spacious, elegant property, sitting on fourteen acres of lush Bel Air, fits its owner to a T. For the man behind the wheel of the Rolls is Hollywood's ageless wonder, Cooper Winslow. A star of the silver screen for decades, a man whose allure to women is the stuff of legend, Coop exudes grace, charm, and old-fashioned style. But today Coop Winslow is in for a major surprise. He's broke. And with no major roles coming his way, Coop is faced with the heartbreaking prospect of selling his beloved home of forty years, or at least renting out the gatehouse and part of the main house. A huge blow to Coop, whose debonair attitude allows him to escape reality much of the time. His new tenants, Mark Friedman and Jimmy O'Connor, are busy coping with problems of their own. Mark's wife of sixteen years just walked out, and Jimmy recently lost his own wife to a devastating illness. But everything changes when Mark's teenage son and daughter move in. Suddenly, The Cottage is transformed, with music blasting from every corner, teenagers on skateboards crashing into vintage cars, and a never-ending parade of young starlets streaming in and out to visit Coop. But amid all the noise and the chaos, something unexpected is happening. Three men who never would have met are becoming friends. and each man finds himself changing in surprising ways, Coop most of all. Because beneath the dazzle and flash, the impeccably tailored suits and the sheer bravado, is a man trying to keep control of

To say Socrates was an influence on Plato would be a vast understatement; historians today still struggle to distinguish Socrates' philosophical beliefs from Plato's, because much of Plato's writings consisted of "Socratic dialogues," in which the main character, Socrates, discusses the topic of the writing with his followers. Yet for all of the influence of Socrates' life on Plato, it was Socrates' death around 399 B.C. that truly shaped him. Plato was so embittered by Socrates' trial in Athens that he completely soured on Athenian democracy, and he began to travel around the Mediterranean, studying topics like mathematics, honing his approach to philosophical thinking, and continuing to refine his philosophical beliefs. About a decade later, Plato returned to Athens and founded his famous Platonic Academy around 387 B.C, which he oversaw for 40 years until his death. One of Plato's philosophical beliefs was that writing down teachings was less valuable than passing them down orally, and several of Plato's writings are responses to previous writings of his, so Plato's personally held beliefs are hard to discern. However, Plato educated several subsequent philosophers, chief among them Aristotle, and his writings eventually formed the backbone of Western philosophy.

They are sentient computer programs, displaying high-level Artificial Intelligence, and are representatives, or "Agents", of the main antagonists within the Matrix fictional universe. They are guardians within the computer-generated world of the Matrix. Something akin to the anti-virus of the Matrix, guarding it from anyone or anything (most often Redpills ) that could reveal it as a false reality or threaten it in any other way. Agents also hunt down and terminate any rogue programs, such as The Keymaker, which no longer serve a purpose to the overall Machine collective. They appear physically human, but it becomes apparent after observing them for only short periods that they are not. They have a tendency to speak and act in highly precise and mechanical ways. Physical aspects Agents wear dark green or black business suits lined with a gold fabric, black dress shoes, a silver bar tie clip to complement the tie, square sunglasses, and a communication earpiece to inform them of any disturbances within the system. These features are copied from the attire for plainclothes agents of the United States Secret Service, as well as those of the Men in Black conspiracy or the stereotypical G-Man /FBI official. They have sideburns, and their hair is either slicked back or side-parted. Matrix Agents carry Desert Eagle handguns in shoulder holsters that are concealed beneath their suits. Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Finntroll is an extreme metal and folk metal band from Helsinki, Finland. They combine elements of black metal, death metal, and folk metal with a type of Finnish folk music called humppa. Finntroll's lyrics are mostly in Swedish, the only exception being the song "Madon Laulu" on Visor Om Slutet. Finntroll's first singer Katla decided to use Swedish over Finnish since he was part of a Swedish-speaking minority in Finland and the sound of the language seemed to better suit the band's "trollish" outfit. Despite several vocalist changes, this tradition has since been continued. According to bandmembers Vreth and Skrymer, they took their name from an old Finnish legend where Swedish priests coming to Finland had an encounter with a wild-looking man who killed most of their party. The survivors came back bearing the tale of the Finn-Troll. Finntroll's lyrics mainly deal with legends and tales revolving around the fictional Troll-King "Rivfader" and the trolls fighting against the Christians who invade their lands and try to spread their beliefs. A recurring theme is the story of two priests named "Aamund" and "Kettil". The first three full length albums feature a rather short but fierce song about the two men who constantly get themselves into trouble with the trolls, only to get beaten up and mutilated over and over again by the wrathful followers of Rivfader.

Historically, the word "culottes" has always referred to the knee-breeches commonly worn by gentlemen of the European upper-classes from the late Middle Ages or Renaissance through the early 19th century. Culottes were normally closed and fastened about the leg, to the knee, by either buttons, a strap and buckle, or by a draw-string. During the French Revolution (late 18th century), the working-class revolutionaries were known as the "sans-culottes" (literally, "without culottes"), and derived their name from their preference for pantaloons rather than the upper-class culottes. Military uniforms incorporated culottes as a standard uniform article, the lower leg being covered by either stockings, leggings, or knee-high boots. Culottes were a common part of military uniforms during the European war of the eighteenth-century (the War of the Spanish Succession, the War of the Austrian Succession, the Seven Years' War, the Franco-British Colonial Wars, and the American Revolution). The women's fashion industry commonly co-opts words that have historically been used to describe men's garments and uses them to describe an entirely different garment, often creating confusion among historians and those who read history. For example, currently, the term "culottes" in French is now used to describe women's panties, an article of

Judicial Review in Mexico

Judicial Review in Mexico

$42.09

The amparo suit is a Mexican legal institution similar in its effects to such Anglo-American procedures as habeas corpus, error, and the various forms of injunctive relief. It has undergone a long evolution since it was incorporated into the Constitution of 1857. Today, its principal purpose is to protect private individuals in the enjoyment of the rights guaranteed by the first twenty-nine articles of the Constitution. Mexico after its independence produced many constitutions. One of the earliest problems was to find an adequate means of defending the Constitution against ill-founded interpretations of its precepts. Like the United States, Mexico has developed a system of constitutional defense in which the judiciary is the supreme interpreter of what this document means. Unlike the United States Supreme Court, however, the Mexican Supreme Court has not been innovative in its decisions or contradicted the administration on major policy decisions. This difference must be attributed to the civil law system of Mexico as well as to the political climate. The first part of Richard D. Baker?s book describes the historical background ofamparo and other methods of constitutional defense in Mexico. The three men most closely associated with creating a judicial form of constitutional defense in Mexico were Manuel Crescencio Rej?n, Jos? Fernando Ram?rez, and Mariano Otero. Their own writings indicate that the immediate source of amparo must be found in the American institution of judicial review that was transmitted to Mexicans through Alexis de Tocqueville?sDemocracy in America. The second part is an exposition of the workings of the amparo suit in the twentieth century and the constitutional and statutory provisions affecting it. Since 1857, when it was incorporated into article 102 of the Constitution, theamparo suit has evolved into a highly complex institution performing three functions: the defense of the ci

After the tragic death of his wife, a young American writer decides that a radical change to his life may help the healing process. On the advice of friends he returns to the land of his forefathers. Arriving in the village of Lower Aghada in the south of Ireland he took residence with an elderly lady who treated him like her own son. Knowing of the death of his wife she did all in her power to provide accommodations suited to his profession. His invitation to join a debating group in the local pub not only provided the distraction to put the past in the past, it also introduced him to a group of men who would become part of his extended family. His attendance at morning mass in the company of his landlady brought the wrath of his debating buddies. Their challenges to his Christian beliefs were relentless and vitriolic. However, his radical interpretation of biblical text caused them to rethink their own opinions. The challenge was now for them to look at scripture in a new way.

He was a major contributor to the development of modern basketball and coached on both the college and professional levels during his career. He is enshrined in both the Basketball Hall of Fame and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. Born in Hiawatha, Kansas, McLendon was part African American and part Delaware Indian. He studied in the 1930s at the University of Kansas, where he learned the intricacies of basketball from the sport's inventor, Dr. James Naismith, who was the head coach there. However, McLendon was not permitted to actually play college basketball, as the KU varsity team was segregated and would not suit up its first black player until 1951. He went onto to become a successful high school and college coach, at schools such as North Carolina College for Negroes, the Hampton Institute, Tennessee State A

Little Sinners

Little Sinners

$19.93

Winner of the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Fiction, Karen Brown?s Little Sinners, and Other Stories features a sad, strange mosaic of women and men grappling with the loss and pain of everyday existence, people inhabiting a suburban landscape haunted by ghosts: a mother who leaps from a ridge, a mistress found at the bottom of the Connecticut River, a father who dresses in a pale blue-custom suit?and disappears. The dead leave behind postcards, houses, bottles of sherry, bones. They become local legends, their stories part of the characters? own: an expectant mother in an isolated cottage on Long Island Sound uncovers an unsettling secret in her backyard; a troubled housewife is lured to a dinner party by a teenage girl whose mother has vanished under mysterious circumstances; a woman and her lover swim the pools of their neighborhood under cover of darkness; a young heiress struggles with mortality and the abandonments in her past. These stories capture the domestic world in all its blighted promise?a world where women?s roles in housekeeping, marriage, childbirth, and sex have been all too well defined, and where the characters fashion, recklessly and passionately, their own methods of escape.

Personnel: John Pelant (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano, keyboards); Mark Ritsema (guitar); Aaron Baum (piano, keyboards); Jared Isabella (drums). Audio Mixer: John Agnello. Recording information: Black Market, Minneapolis, MN; Russell Street Recording, Brooklyn, NY; Winterland Studios, Minneapolis, MN. Full of cool, moody surfaces and pop melodies that sounded part mid-'70s, part present day, Night Moves' debut album, Colored Emotions, was one of the more pleasant surprises of 2012. While the vague country influences on Colored Emotions have faded somewhat, the group's second album, 2016's Pennied Days, finds Night Moves moving slowly but confidently forward from their early work. Anchored in the striking, elemental keyboard work of multi-instrumentalist John Pelant, Pennied Days is a bittersweet song cycle that suggests several lovelorn characters have moved to a midsized college town. Just as Colored Emotions indicated a Midwestern mindset behind the layers of vintage pop, Pennied Days seems to be dominated by heartbroken young men in a cool climate. Pelant's lead vocals work wonders in evoking this album's sense of time and place, sounding thoughtfully sad and quietly passionate throughout, and his guitar work is splendid. (He's in especially powerful form on the seven-and-a-half-minute epic Hiding in the Melody.) The complicated emotions suit the tenor of the music to a T, and this is pretty/sad music in the great tradition of the Poppy Family and the Carpenters. However, it's livelier than either of those acts, and as much as Night Moves borrow from the past, this music has a sincerity and strength that's all its own. Pennied Days doesn't have a clear narrative, but the songs work as a set as well as they do individually, and the sequence is intelligent and favors the material. It's one thing to make a great debut album, and quite another to make an equally effective follow-up. Night Moves have done just that on Pennied Days, an indie pop marvel well worth

When Jared Dillian joined Lehman Brothers in 2001, he fulfilled a life-long dream to make it on Wall Street?but he had no idea how close to the edge the job would take him. Like Michael Lewis?s classic Liar?s Poker, Jared Dillian?s Street Freak takes readers behind the scenes of the legendary Lehman Brothers, exposing its outrageous and often hilarious corporate culture. In this ultracompetitive Ivy League world where men would flip over each other?s ties to check out the labels (also known as the? Lehman Handshake?), Dillian was an outsider as an ex-military, working-class guy in a Men?s Wearhouse suit. But he was scrappy and determined; in interviews he told potential managers that, ?Nobody can work harder than me. Nobody is willing to put in the hours I will put in. I am insane. As it turned out, on Wall Street insanity is not an undesirable quality. Dillian rose from green associate, checking IDs at the entrance to the trading floor in the paranoid days following 9/11, to become an integral part of Lehman?s culture in its final years as the firm?s head Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) trader. More than $1 trillion in wealth passed through his hands, but at the cost of an untold number of smashed telephones and tape dispensers. Over time, the exhilarating and explosively stressful job took its toll on him. The extreme highs and lows of the trading floor masked and exacerbated the symptoms of Dillian?s undiagnosed bipolar and obsessive compulsive disorders, leading to a downward spiral that eventually landed him in a psychiatric ward. Dillian put his life back together, returning to work healthier than ever before, but Lehman itself had seemingly gone mad, having made outrageous bets on commercial real estate, and was quickly headed for self-destruction. A raucous account of the final years of Lehman Brothers, from 9/11 at its World Financial Center offices through the firm?s bankruptcy, including vivi

The suit is still the uniform du jour for millions of men that can be seen everywhere from boardrooms to bawdy bars. It ranges from the anonymous and dignified dress of politicians and businessmen to the expression of dandified tendencies for the young or fashionable. This lushly illustrated review examines the fascinating history of the evolution of the modern suit from the days of the 19th-century tailor-made to the mass industrialization of the early part of the 20th century. The path whereby the dress of the ruling classes became the utilitarian outfit of the worker is also traced, along with a study of the progression of suit style over subsequent decades, including the fabrics and cuts used.
